Duration: 15 minute briefing; 15 minutes in the water Cost: $249.00 per person Details: Maximum of 1 party (up to 4 people). Spaces are limited so book your swim today! Offered: 9:15 AM daily
Interactive swim provides a thrilling marine mammal adventure of a lifetime! In this deep-water program, guests experience the speed, power, and gentle precision of our Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) via a variety of trained behaviors. Guests begin the program with an educational briefing, and acquire information concerning dolphin anatomy and biology, marine mammal and ocean conservation, and detailed descriptions of the dolphin interactions.
Following the briefing, swimmers are divided into smaller groups, in an effort to maximize and personalize each dolphin interaction. In this swim, guests are asked to enter a natural, ocean-water lagoon (10-15 feet deep) and tread water, while wearing a flotation vest. Guests take turns entering the water and interact directly with the dolphins. Each swimmer will experience fast-paced behaviors such as foot pushes and dorsal tows, participate in powerful bows over hoops and poles, interact with intimate behaviors such as handshakes, belly rubs, and kisses, and even test their skills as trainers, while giving the dolphins hand signals. A dolphin trainer guides the dolphins and the humans through a series of fun and exciting behaviors and directs each dolphin swim. Swimmers should plan on spending at least 2 hours at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder from start to finish.
Trainer for a Day
Shadow a trainer for a day at DPMMR! This program combines dolphin interactions with a behind the scenes look into marine mammal care and training. Please join us for this unique and exciting educational opportunity!
From swimming with dolphins, to fish preparation and washing buckets, participants work one-on-one with an experienced animal trainer to gain insight into marine mammal care and training. The day is complete with in-depth discussions and experiential learning, encompassing topics such as training, marine mammal care, animal identification, dolphin anatomy and reproduction, marine mammal intelligence and communication, enrichment, and tactics utilized to build a trusting relationship between trainer and animal.
A critical (and rewarding) part of a trainer's job is to create and maintain a positive relationship with the dolphins they work with. At Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder, trainers swim with the dolphins in private sessions throughout the day to help foster this relationship. The Shadow a Trainer for a Day program is the only Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder experience that invites participants to join a trainer during this private natural swim time.
The Trainer for a Day program also includes an 8x10 photo of you and our dolphins to commemorate your experience, a Trainer for a Day t-shirt, and a comprehensive book [Pursuing Your Career as a Marine Mammal Trainer or Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises (an identification guide)]. This is supplemental to the knowledge and enjoyment participants gain during this unique program.

Guided Natural Swim
Guided by one of our marine mammal trainers, guests are led on a snorkeling experience of a lifetime, where the goal is to observe and learn more about the dolphins' natural behavior. Guests are encouraged and shown how to simulate dolphin body language with parallel swimming and diving underwater. Participants in this program enjoy the unique experience of becoming a member of a dolphin pod, while observing the dolphins' natural grace, beauty, and curiosity. Guests may observe natural behaviors such as nursing, vocalizations, hunting/fishing, and diverse social interactions within the pod.
During an educational briefing preceding the swim, guests will learn about a variety of marine mammal topics such as dolphin anatomy, reproductive biology, intelligence and communication, echolocation, and marine mammal conservation. Swimmers will also receive guidelines on how to conduct themselves in the water, as well as suggestions to stimulate dolphin curiosity. Due to the naturalistic feel of this swim, participants are asked not to reach out to touch the dolphins in this program. If you are interested in touching a dolphin, try one of our many other encounters! Guests are in the water for 20 minutes and prior snorkeling experience is recommended, but not required. While in the water, mask and fins are required, however the snorkel is optional. If you are looking for an unusual dolphin experience, sign up for Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder's Guided Natural Swim and snorkel with our dolphins!

Marine Biologist for a Day
Working as a Marine Mammal Trainer at DPMMR involves more than training dolphins and educating the public. We are acquiring valuable knowledge about dolphin behavior and how they perceive their world. The dedicated animal care staff at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder participates in daily assessments of animal behavior as part of ongoing research projects. Do you want to know more about dolphin behavior and gain hands on marine mammal research experience? Then, the DPMMR "Marine Biologist for a Day" is the program for you!
Start off with some detailed insight into dolphin behavior from one of our trainers and then begin a longitudinal study of mother-calf interactions with our spunky, new calf! The data you gather will be shared with the scientific community conducting vital research on the maternal and paternal care of marine mammals. During the study, you'll learn about various sampling techniques and how to effectively acquire scientific data. Most importantly, you'll learn how to interpret dolphin behavior by watching the new calf interact with her parents.
Oh, your day isn't done yet! Next up, you'll help prepare the fish and vitamin regimens for our dolphins. As part of this uniquely holistic program, you'll learn about marine mammal care and the things our trainers and vets do to ensure the physical and psychological wellbeing of our beloved animals.
There are several ongoing research projects at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder, including the assessment of higher cognitive abilities in our dolphins. This research will one day contribute to a greater understanding of dolphin intelligence and cognitive functioning. During the afternoon, you'll learn about these groundbreaking studies and develop your own independent research project. Plus, you'll participate in a private natural swim with our dolphins (including in-water data collection!), and, afterwards, receive a one-on-one career guidance session with a staff scientist.
There's another part of our job that we're very serious about - having fun with the animals! So, during mid-day feeding, you'll enjoy some playtime with the dolphins from their floating docks, doing belly rubs, kisses, and acquiring an 8x10 photo to commemorate your day as a Marine Biologist.
